There’s No Such Thing As Too Much Style.
Meredith
O’Donnell — the name in Houston brings to mind the finest
of home furnishings. New designs from venerable Old American factories,
such as Baker, Henkel-Harris, Stickley and Hickory Chair are shown
on the two store floors. Collectors wait eagerly for the containers
of hand-inlaid traditional Italian furniture. Modern upholstery
designs by Barbara Barry, Jacques Garcia and Thomas Pheasant are
stocked for immediate delivery.
Meredith O’Donnell Fine Furniture, Accessories
& Rugs began as simply a fine furniture store, but has evolved
in to a full-service design firm at the corner of Kirby Drive and
West Alabama, nestled between the River Oaks, West University and
Medical Center residential areas. Soon, the store was filling a
unique niche for people looking for just the right pieces of furniture
for their homes.
“We
are an open-to-the-public retail store, but have always been an
important resource for independent interior designers in Texas.
Customers find that we carry items they cannot find elsewhere. The
initial main corner building expands into a second, entirely separate,
freestanding building on West Alabama. Customers can park in front
of either building and stroll from one to the other to see the latest
shipments. The 2992 Kirby Drive store (at West Alabama) usually
features formal traditional and contemporary collections, while
2622 West Alabama always offers a casual (European feel), eclectic
and somewhat less expensive mix. It has a Milling Road Gallery,
many one-of-a-kind decorated pieces
and also a wonderful display of hand-knotted rugs. Neither store
is huge, but because products are sold from the floor, merchandise
is always coming and going.
As wonderful as they are, the items in the stores
are not intended to be museum pieces. “Well-constructed furnishings
are meant to be used and loved by the owner,” says Meredith.
“This does not mean they have to be the most expensive. We
are a high-end store, but our selection is broad and constantly
changes.
